Sony has announced that the creators of PS3 (using 3 cell proc with 7 SPE's) will distribute a OS platform piece of software based on LINUX. As you might know, Cell already works on Linux.
A little while ago, I've send an email to MentalImages, creator of Mental Ray (proffesional 3D renderer) with the question if they will support the cell cores. There answer was: Yes, if succesfull.

So depending on the succes of the cell chip, in 2008 rendering will go like this:
Create an 3d scene in Max, Maya, Softimage, etc, export to Mentalray (Alias has an Mentalray Standalone for Maya), instal Linux and the MentalRay standalone on PS3, open the exported file and:
Rendering will go between the 12 and the 18 times faster then on the fastes singecore p4 or Athlon today!!!!!

I see programming for cell as revolutionary. The concept of parallel computing it not new but a widespread use ot it would be.

Any one knows the difficulty that the programmers experience on cell?

Yeah, sorry about the downtime. Had a ton of problems with the old server. But now its back up on a new server, and I will be adding a lot of resources to the website.
